Yes, Global Terrorism and all that… December 27, 2007

How does one stop global terrorism? I know today I wrote a whole shpiel on how terrorism is a matter of who defines it and how we are all potential terrorists and how intellectually we can never be rid of terrorism…but all that seems so far away…theorizing and all is fine, but what does one do now, at this very moment, to stop people blowing up people? What concrete steps can be taken by the establishment to stop the most visible face of terror?

One thing is obvious; it’s all a matter of money. Goons need money to buy the AK-47s, to buy bombs, to buy the material to make bombs. STOP the flow of money, trace the lines of funding and cut it off! If anybody is serious about fighting this kind of violence, this is the very least that they can and must do! As for the deeper questions of what is a terrorist- let the bloodshed stop, and maybe we can take it up from there…

I don’t think stopping Terrorism is that easy. You’re right that the goons need money for all the arms and ammunition but it’s difficult to stop that because the people who say they’re fighting terrorism could very well be the ones who are propagating it. Take Pakistan for instance, Pervez Musharraf has always said that he’s trying to stop terrorism but the way people are dying and the way Benazir Bhutto was assassinated yesterday clearly suggests that people from the government and the security forces are involved somewhere. Even the corruption factor can come in..these terrorists can bribe the security officials to get valuable inside information which they can then use in their attacks.

I don’t really see a way this can be stopped. If the terrorists just decide to change their ways, it might happen but why would they change it? They’re too blinded by religion and all such factors. Even if all the countries come together, it is going to be a tough fight to stop it. Terrorism is at a high these days, these people believe they have the right to kill any person they want to.
